Evaluation Question 4
Who would be the
audience for your media product?
The target audience for my film would be teenagers between the ages of 13-18. This is because my film opening is similar to the film 'Twilight', which is also aimed towards teenagers. Vampires are hugely popular in cinema at the moment with this age group, and is evident with its grossing of $35.7 million on its opening day, and reinforced by its later sequel, Breaking Dawn Part 2 grossing $829 dollars worldwide, and becoming the 34th highest-grossing film of all time.
The age rating of my film is a 12A, not only so my target audience is able to see it, but because I believe that younger children may enjoy watching my film. Since it has no killing in the opening that we filmed, it is suitable for the younger children, and would attract them as it is similar to some films that are already out, but it is also something different, and since my opening is non-violent and both challenges and conforms conventions of other films, it would open the younger audience to other films, such as The Woman In Black, which is another thriller which is a 12A.
My film is aimed at females. This is due, once again, to the Twilight saga, which had a large female audience and was mostly females that went to see these films, as we have learned from our feedback, where a couple of the females that answered the questionairres listed Twilight as their favourite film.
The uses and grafications theory is a theory that the audience actively seeks out media to satisfy specific needs. These specific needs are divided into four categories: diversion, which is where the audience uses media as a way to escape from everyday life; personal relationships which is where the media product gives the audience an opportunity to become part of a social group; personal identity where the audience may find something about themselves through these media products; and personal surveillance which is where they find about the world around them through media. Our audience would probably come under the diversion and personal relationships needs.
